
2014 Professional Activities
STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK, STONY BROOK
2014 has already been quite busy, productive and enjoyable, continuing providing care for patients who have temporomandibular disorders, TMD and mentoring other dentists. In January, Dr. Cooper conducted practical demonstrations of the computerized testing protocol used in the treatment of patients with TMD on fourth year students at SUNY Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine. In January lectures were presented to the third year students on neuromuscular dentistry and temporomandibular disorders (TMD).
In February, Dr. Cooper, one of the founders and past Chariman of the American Alliance of TMJ Organizations participated in the organizations’s annual meeting in Chicago.
BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA
In March, together with six other international invited lecturers and presenters from the host country, Dr. Cooper participated in a very successful overseas scientific meeting. The Second International Congress on Neuromuscular Dentistry and Craniomandibular Pain Dysfunction, conducted jointly by The International College of Craniomandibular Orthopedics, South American Section and the Universidad Abierta Interamericana (Interamerican Open University) School of Dentistry, took place on March 28-29, 2014 in the prestigious Central Military Hospital in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Dr. Cooper presented the Principal Lecture, which included: An Introduction to Neuromuscular Occlusion, Temporomandibular Disorders as well as two published research studies.
The trip to Argentina included an excursion 1000 miles south of Buenos Aires for most of the group of international guests and hosts to the beautiful area of San Carlos de Bariloche in Patagonia, located on a magnificent lake with the snowcapped Andes Mountains bordering Chile as a backdrop. The trip was filled with warm hospitality, great friendships and lots of laughs, great steak, delicious malbec wine, a wonderful tango show and sightseeing; for all of which Argentina is well known.
INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE OF CRANIO-MANDIBULAR ORTHOPEDICS, NORTH AMERICAN SECTION MEETING
Dr. Cooper attended and presented two lectures at the 25th Annual Bernard Jankelson Memorial Forum of the North American Section of the International College Cranio-Mandibular Orthopedics (ICCMO) held in New Orleans, Louisiana, September 18-20, 2014. Dr. Cooper serves as International Treasurer and is a Past International President.
His first lecture was titled “Introduction to Neuromuscular Dental Occlusion in Restorative Dentistry and in the treatment of Temporomandibular Disorders. The second lecture, given with Dr. Frederick Stange, was titled “A Collaboration of Two Neuromuscular Dentists to Provide Initial and Long Term TMD Treatment.” In this presentation two doctors illustrated how they collaborate on the treatment of specific patients in their New York City offices.
PUBLICATIONS
Dr. Cooper continues to serve on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Craniomandibular and Sleep Practice and reviews manuscripts for that journal and for the Journal of the American Dental Association. Dr. Cooper has again been asked to serve as Editor of the next Anthology Volume XI of The International College of Cranio-Mandibular Orthopedics (ICCMO), which will be published in 2015. He has begun to seek contributing manuscripts from members around the world on neuromuscular clinical practice techniques and research in the field of neuromuscular occlusion, to aid in the education of current and future generations of dentists with the goal of improvement of patient care.
